Bar-B-Que

The PSA would like to thank everyone who attended/donated for the bike ride. To date, we have received more than £550, and there could still be more to come in.

Can we also remind you of the PSA’s social event of the summer – the Summer BBQ and Disco. This will be on Saturday 12th June from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the church hall. Tickets are £5 for adults and £2.50 for children (over 3) and that price includes something from the BBQ (sausage or burger) and one drink. Wine and lager will be available for the adults. Tickets will be available soon from PSA members (Julie, Kate, Lucy, Helen, Tracy, Marianne or Fiona Duffy).

Parents can send money via the school for Bar-B-Que tickets in sealed envelope marked PSA Bar-B-Que.

PSA news – A message from the PSA

We would like to thank everyone for their support at the Yulefest event in December. We feel it was a great success and we are very proud to report that the profits for the day amount to over £1400. We did spend more money this year on lights and tablecloths etc but we will be able to use these items in future years.

In our last meeting we have agreed a diary of events for the next 12 months. This includes a Jumble Sale at the end of Feb (date tbc) where you can pass on any uniforms etc; the annual bike ride at Loch Katrine on Sunday 16th May; the summer BBQ on Saturday 19th June; a family ceilidh in September (again, date tbc); and the Yulefest event this year will be on Saturday 4th December.

Could we also remind you to set your homepage on your computer to easyfundraising.org.uk. Then, whenever you buy anything online, using that link, you will be raising money for St Mary’s. Just go to their homepage, click “select a cause”, enter Dunblane in the search field and then select St Mary’s Episcopal School.

Many Thanks

Julie Gordon (PSA Secretary)

PSA YULEFEST – 2009

The PSA (Parent Staff Association) would like to remind you all about this years Christmas Fayre and Grotto (aka Yulefest). It is on Saturday 5th December from 1pm to 4pm at the Church Hall.

By now you should have received some raffle tickets. If you haven’t received any, or if you could sell some more, then please ask a member of the PSA. We would very much appreciate the money and stubs (or unsold tickets) to be returned to the school office (or a PSA member) on or before Friday 4th December. Raffle tickets will still be on sale on the day and there are some fantastic prizes to be won.

We would appreciate as much help as you can offer. We still need bottles for the tombola/bottle stall (bottles of anything – wine, bubble bath, fruit juice, tomato ketchup!!), home-baking and any decent used wooden toys/jigsaws/board games/books and DVD’s for the Toy Stall (no plastic please!!). Please send any donations to the school or directly to a member of the PSA.

Help on the day is always appreciated so if you can spare an hour or more then please let us know.

But, whether you can help or not, please come along on the 5th and have some mulled wine, eat some Indian food (India Gate will have a stall) and have a look at the various stalls selling Christmas items. There will be a brass band playing carols and, of course, the children can visit Santa in his Grotto.

Thanks from the PSA (Philip Thomson, Kate Baxter, Julie Gordon, Lucy MacKechnie, Marianne Eik, Tracy Perry, Helen Carr, Elaine Burch & Fiona Duffy)

Message from the Parent Council

Further to the AGM the Parent council welcomes Philip Thomson and Ruth Rennie as new members. Fiona Gornall remains as chair and Doug Tullis as secretary. This will be their third and final year of office. The next meeting is on November 18th at 7pm in the staff room. All parents are welcome to attend. Any matters for the agenda please contact any member of the committee or the school.

PSA

The next meeting of the PSA will be in school on 29th September 2009 at 7.30pm

The PSA does an excellent job of fund raising each year. All money raised is spent to the benefit of the pupils in the school and nursery. The money helps to provide items such as costumes for shows and pays for visitors to school from zoolab or Blair Drummond Safari Park. The money is also used to subsidize school trips such as the P1 visit to the Tall Ship in Glasgow during the pirate topic and the P2/3s trip to the Wallace Monument during the Scottish History topic. It is also used to subsidize the P7 residential trip and the P4/5 visit to the Scottish Parliament will be partly funded by PSA money. Subsidizes from the PSA mean that trips that should cost £12 to £15 per child actually only cost £5 to £6.

The PSA has a well established fund raising calendar  – The Grotto, Sponsored Cycle Ride and Bar-B Que.

Last session they added a new fund raising activity which is open to all families and extended families. If anyone is shopping on line and they register with http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/stmarysepiscopal to support St Mary’s they can order goods from major stores such as NEXT, M&S, John Lewis and raise funds for the school.

Parent Council

The role of the Parent Council is to assist Mrs Paterson and the staff in maintaining the smooth and happy running of the school. It also provides a link between parent/carers and staff, where issues can be raised and discussed at meetings. Examples of this practice over the last session include:

Reading and commenting on revised school policies.
Collecting information from nursery parents for a quality of care report
Clarification of the school’s position on such things as Halloween celebrations and disruption to school meal service.
An ongoing campaign to improve road safety and considerate parking outside school.
Meetings are held every 6 to 8 weeks in the staff room. They are never longer than 2 hours and are very informal. Please give some consideration to joining the council. You would be made very welcome. Everyone who has a child at St Mary’s school or nursery has an opinion that matters. A wide cross section of views is important and it would be good to involve as many families as possible.

At the AGM on 10th September 2008 the following was discussed and agreed:
Committee Members are as follows
Post holders:
Chair: Fiona Gornall
Treasurer: Alison Diamond
Secretary: Mary Toop
Ordinary members:
Rosalind Ginoris, Doug Tullis, Andrew Proctor.

We would like to welcome new committee members:
Mary Watson
Lisa Stewart
Caroline Paterson

The staff representative is
Jenny Kinvig

Parents/carers from nursery and school are welcome to attend any meetings. If anyone has a matter to be discussed please contact Fiona Gornall or Mary Toop and it can be added to the agenda.

The minutes of the meetings are posted on the outdoor school notice board and on the school website.

The next meeting is Wednesday 22nd October 2008 at 7.00pm in the staffroom.

There is a DVD available explaining the new Curriculum for Excellence which replaces ‘5-14’. Please ask Fiona Gornall if you would like to borrow it.

We are still working with Stirling Council to implement improvements in safety measures along Smithy Loan, as outlined in the travel plan sent home earlier in the year. It is a very slow process. Parents/carers can help by

· Only driving along Smithy Loan if completely necessary, using the India Gate as an ideal car park – PARK AND STRIDE

· NOT parking at either end of the ZIGZAGS

· REMEMBERING it is illegal to drop off/park on the single yellow line opposite school

· Watching your speed

Please could this message be passed on to all parents/carers who have the responsibility of bringing/collecting your children from nursery and school.

Finally we would like to express our thanks to Janice Cameron who has been a member of the Parent Council and former School Board. We shall miss her expertise, knowledge, experience of all things ‘St Mary’s’ and her sense of humour. We wish her a very happy retirement.

Fiona Gornall

Chairperson

St Mary’s Episcopal Primary School Parent Council

Next Meeting:
The date of the next meeting of the Parent Council is to be confirmed.
All parents are welcome to attend and any items for the agenda can be given to Fiona Gornall or Mary Toop.
