On the 16th of March the p6/7s went to the Peak to play basketball against the other Stirling schools. we were set into three different groups, group 1, group 2 and group 3. There were twelve matches, each team played eight. For some of the matches we sat out to get a rest and watch the other teams play. The hall was split into eight pitches and one rest area. There was hall 1 and hall 2. They all got tired very quickly, and gladly we didn’t have to play in all of the matches.
Each match lasted five minutes and the substitutes went on half way through the match. At the end all the schools went to hall two to find out who won the prizes, unfortunately we didn’t win but Sophie won the best hustle, Frazer won the most valued player, or M.V.P and Dugal was asked to play for a team called the Stirling Knights.
Before we went back to school on the bus we got a goodie bag and then we came out of the peak and went back on the bus to school.
Then a few days later we got letters to school inviting Sophie H and Fraser to try out for the Stirling Knights too.
So… well done everyone!

On the 26th March 2010 Eddie the penguin came to St Mary’s . His mission was to help change attitudes about how we look after our planet.
First of all we met Eddie and his family.
The first song was sung by the nursery it was called “the Melting Song” it was all about where the ice is melting. Then they next set off to Antarctica were they met some polar bears, that is were they found out it was the humans causing the problems. Primary one sung a song about great big polar bears. Then Eddie set off on his journey. The next song was by Primary 2/3 it was the walking song it had a message in it about how you can walk to school skip, scoot and cycle to school. After that primary 4/5 did a song about wearing cosy jumpers instead of turning up your heating and other things to do to save electricity . Then primary 2/3 did another song about don’t chop down trees because it makes the ice melt. The song was called trees.
Then primary 6/7 sung a song called recycling song. Were they said all the things we can recycle and things we can’t. We had fun dancing to all the songs. Last of all we sang a song called one world that the whole school sang.
After the stars had left- that’s us. All the parents got to go and see the Eco display we had things the houses had made and all the eco things we have done. Hope that everyone enjoyed it. Well done to everyone who took part in the show and well done all of the classes also well done the teachers.
The main messages we want everyone to remember from the show are:
- Walk or cycle to school
- Wear warmer cloths instead of turning up the heating
- Don’t chop down trees
- Recycle more

On the 19th March we had a sports relief day. The Health Committee decided we should do a ‘Memorable Mile.’
Everyone came dressed in fancy dress costumes and we also had to run, skip, jump, hop or anything like that for a mile. I think we can all agree it was pretty tiring! We didn’t do it in the playground as it was going to be too small so we did it up at the Double Tree (The Hydro) so we would like to thank them for the use of the space.
Sports Relief Socks
The Sports Relief socks were very popular! Dunblane High School were doing Sports Relief too so they helped us with the socks to get more people involved.
Competitions
We had three competitions which were judged by the teachers and the High School Pupils. The Contests were:
- The Biggest Smile Whilst Running
- The Most Inventive “sock wearing”
- The Best Fancy Dress
Our Winners were, Charles, P2, for the biggest smile, Kirsty, P7, for the wearing the most socks all over her top!!! Our final prize went to Holly, P3, for her beautiful fancy dress costume.
P6/7 entered a film competition, we wanted to win so we had a big discussion with the whole class to see what we would base it on. Joe Shaw, who was going to help us with the film joined in to.
Suddenly the idea of Scotland’s got talent got mentioned and that was just the start of our film. Then the idea of break dancing midges (Biodiversity) , two dancing fairies (Faerie Wishes), and a singing loch ness monster (LoMo). With all these ideas we split up into four groups that were the, Presenters Judges and Script Writers, who wrote the script, did the judges voices and filmed the presenters.
LoMo, who wrote the song for LoMo to sing, drew LoMo and recorded her voice.
Faerie wishes, which choreographed a dance, preformed it and got two boys to dress up as fairies.
Biodiversity, made midges, made a mini stage and took lots of photos then put then together to make break dancing midges.
Finally Joe put all of these together and that was our film done.
Then we sent it off to the film contest judges to see if we can get though to the finals, then we just had to wait…
A few weeks later we got a letter saying we got through to the finals. So four of us out of each group get to go to the macrobert to see if we have won on the 24 of March!

This month, the Kippenross House Morning was based on launching a new grant that the Scottish CVS Action Earth are giving out to schools and other groups for environment projects. We used ours to plant seeds, like Lavender and Rosemary, and make Bat Boxes to help bats. And since our school was the first school to use it, we got to have the big launch based here.
It all started a few months ago, when Anne Youngman from the Bat Conservation Trust came in to talk to us about bats and the danger they’re in. Then she e-mailed us that there was going to be this big grant launched, and we just couldn’t say no!
First, we had a talk from Anne, some people from the CVS and Bruce Crawford, our local MSP. (Everyone enjoyed him coming in!) Then we made bat badges and batty labels for our plant pots.
Rory in P5 said,
“I really enjoyed making the bat badges and batty labels.”
Then at snack time some people from the paper came and took photos of us all, with Rachel H and Hamish dressed up as giant bats!
Then after snack some of the younger children planted seeds with Anne, and the older children made bat boxes with some of the adult helpers, and a bat box expert.
Rachel R in P4 said,
“It was really good fun planting the seeds for the bats.”
And Bethany, P5 and Cameron, P4 said,
“We really liked making the bat boxes and using the drill.”
Over all I think it was a great day and we helped the bats a lot.

On 2nd March Primary 2/3 went on a visit to Stirling Castle. We split into two groups, we went into different parts of the castle. The first group was with Miss Hughes and the second group was with Mrs Mace. We worked our way into the castle and we saw a knight with all his chain mail and armour. He also had a sword and a dagger. We also saw the prison which is called the dungeon it was in one of the towers under the ground so it was very cold and dark.
We went into the kitchen and Miss Hughes had given us questions to think about during the visit -like what did they have to eat and did the knights eat the same as the royal people? We found out that they didn’t have ovens but used fires and the royal people were fed first and then the knights and then the ordinary people and then the dogs if there was any left. Then we went into the great hall and found out that the wood on the roof kept it warm and when they restored it they didn’t use a single nail but they put it together like a giant jig saw using one hundred oak trees. We saw someone making a tapestry and they said that it would be finished in July next year and three of them had been working on it for two years already!
We all really enjoyed the trip and the Castle topic.

On Thursday 4th March it was World Book Day. For it we all dressed up as our favourite characters from books. We had an assembly on UNICEF children’s rights and one of the rights is to have a free education and access to books so we realised how fortunate we were. Also in the assembly we learned about Mary‘s Meals a charity which helps children who are not as fortunate as us, they don’t have an education or anything to eat.

P4/5 have been collaborating with Dunblane Museum to learn more about the purpose of museums and collections. They will be putting some of their own collections on display in the museum in an exhibition called “The Art of Collecting”. There will be a special launch event on Thursday 1st April to which all P4/5 parents will be invited. The exhibition will then be open to the public for the month of April.
