Batty About Bats!

This month, the Kippenross House Morning was based on launching a new grant that the Scottish CVS Action Earth are giving out to schools and other groups for environment projects. We used ours to plant seeds, like Lavender and Rosemary, and make Bat Boxes to help bats. And since our school was the first school to use it, we got to have the big launch based here.

It all started a few months ago, when Anne Youngman from the Bat Conservation Trust came in to talk to us about bats and the danger they’re in. Then she e-mailed us that there was going to be this big grant launched, and we just couldn’t say no!

First, we had a talk from Anne, some people from the CVS and Bruce Crawford, our local MSP. (Everyone enjoyed him coming in!) Then we made bat badges and batty labels for our plant pots.

Rory in P5 said,
“I really enjoyed making the bat badges and batty labels.”

Then at snack time some people from the paper came and took photos of us all, with Rachel H and Hamish dressed up as giant bats!

Then after snack some of the younger children planted seeds with Anne, and the older children made bat boxes with some of the adult helpers, and a bat box expert.

Rachel R in P4 said,
“It was really good fun planting the seeds for the bats.”

And Bethany, P5 and Cameron, P4 said,
“We really liked making the bat boxes and using the drill.”

Over all I think it was a great day and we helped the bats a lot.

Kilbryde House Eco Morning

Kilbryde house had a house morning on the 4th of December. Our activity in this house morning was to make pomanders. Pomanders are large oranges that we stuck cloves into they also had red, green or white. We all had great fun doing this activity but that wasn’t it after this we made an eco tree first we drew round our hands on paper then cut them out and stuck them in the shape of a Christmas tree with mottos we would do over the holiday to do with saving energy. Everyone had a great time and can’t wait for the next one.

Cromlix Eco Morning

On our third and final eco morning for this year Cromlix were very busy making things. First of all most of us stayed inside and made some stars to decorate the garden, while some of us braved the freezing cold and emptied the bins. Unfortunately the lid of the bin had frozen to the bin but eventually it came off. After we had emptied the bins and made lovely stars we had a special visitor.

Emily who works for Keep Scotland Beautiful came in and talked to us about the ever growing problem of global warming. Then she taught us to make some amazing wallets made of only old juice cartons. They worked very well and were surprisingly strong. This was definitely one of our best eco mornings and everyone put in a lot of effort.

Batty Bat Day!!

For Kippenross’ third house morning (yes, it’s the third already) we had a Batty Bat day!!! First, we had a visit from Anne Youngman from the Bat Conservation Trust, or BCT for short, who told us all about bats, and let us have a bit of fun at the end. As well as telling us everything we’d ever need to know to go batty (like I’m going while writing this), she let us pretend to be bats too! (That was the fun bit!!!) We sprouted wings, grew our ears, and FLEEEEEEEEW!!!!!!!! Of into the night.

After snack, we made the most exciting, coolest, hats ever! Bat Hats! They have black rims, and colourful strips of paper with bats (not real ones, thankfully) at the end. You can also stick stickers, moons and stars on the front. Totally Batty!!!

Over-all I think every one had a brilliant time, and hopefully learned a thing or too as well.

Like, BATS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keir House Eco Morning

First we did Christmassy outlines on glass jars with stain glass window paints. Whilst we were waiting for the paints to dry we played healthy games on the computer and board games that we made.

Kippenross House Morning

For Kippenross’ second house morning we had a day based on trees, plants and wildlife. First we split into groups and went up Holme Hill for a scavenger hunt. We were looking for different types of leaves, twigs, plats and nuts. We had some adult help. We had an explorer kit that had lots of exciting things like tiny magnifying glasses, which you had to put right up to your eye to see through, and binoculars. After snack, we watched a video on the computer about Charles Darwin and how we can discover things too. Then some people went up to the computer suite to play some games on the computers and the remaining people stayed in the classroom and made animal food chain mobiles and puppets.

Keir House News

We have now had two house mornings; Keir has had great fun on both of them.

On Friday the 6th November we had the second house morning. First Em from Keep Scotland Beautiful came in to talk to us about Carbon Footprint. After her power-point she asked us a couple of questions to make sure the information had sunk in to our brains. Then, she made stickers with us about saving energy and water. Em took some away with her to turn into proper stickers (as the ones we made had blue-tack on the back to keep them sticky). All that took us up to snack time.

After snack we allocated each member of Keir a recipe that we will put on the website to illustrate. We noticed fantastic drawing skills from primary one all the way up to primary seven.

We then did a fitness competition. We all had to do as many jump squats as possible in 20 seconds (it’s way harder than it sounds, honestly!) this will be carrying on throughout all house mornings, and we will see if we can improve how many we can do. It was all great fun and we hope all of Keir are looking forward to the next house morning.

Focus On Eco Days

On our second eco morning we all brought news papers in to make something with. People made all sorts of thing from a hat to a boat and even a hedgehog. The best ideas and designs were put on display outside the office. It was great fun and we all enjoyed doing it.

Some other people made posters to advertise the new eco bags. We hope you will buy lots of the bags because they are lovely and very well designed. Sophie and Rachel wrote letters for people to fill out for the bee bags which you can bring into school.

We also put up posters to stop people littering.

Next eco morning Emily will be coming to talk to us about how to be even more eco friendly. We will also be making a bird feeder out of recyclables and paint animals and things on rocks.

Kippen Ross Busy Bees

Save the Bee Campaign

Save the Bee Campaign

For Kippenross’ first house morning we had a Busy Bee Day when we did the ‘Save the Honey Bees Project’. We started off by getting a talk from Mr Goulson from Stirling University. He set up the Bee Conservation Trust. He told us that the girl bees do all the hard work! Then we split up into three groups, to do three different activities. The activities were making bees from egg cartons, making bee finger puppets, and playing a game like build a beetle, but not beetles, bees. Before that though, we made an Action Plan on what to do to save the bees, which included handing out seeds of plants which honey bees like, such as Chive, Foxglove and Lavender. Bees are dying out because there are not enough flowers for htem in gardens and fields anymore. If you could please, please, PLEASE try to plant some of these in your garden. It would be a really big help. Everyone really enjoyed the first house morning, and we can’t wait to continue the project at the next house morning.

Keir’s House Morning

Making Handwashing Reminders

Making Handwashing Reminders

Friday the 2nd of October all the houses did a House morning.

Keir first of all made posters about healthy eating.

That took us up until snack. Then after that we watched a DVD about washing our hands properly. When that finished, we got very messy because, we hand printed on to paper with paint to make a poster to tell people to wash their hands. When the paint dried we stuck posters on from a package that Mrs. Paterson gave us.

When everyone had finished painting we had to wash our hands properly and Mrs. Kinvig would know if we succeeded because we would have not the tiniest speck of paint on our hands. All of us passed so we all became hand washing agents with our passes and stickers.

Keir had the best fun ever!
