Merlyn Diamond!

Have you ever dreamt of being an Olympic athlete? Well, Merlyn Diamond from Namibia had that dream and now she’s going to hopefully qualify for the Olympics.

Our school has been picked for a BBC project. We have been linked to a school in Namibia. Mrs Currie went down to London and went and met up with Merlyn Diamond and other people from the BBC. She came to St Mary’s on the 18th of January and she went into P2/3 where the 1’s, 2’s and 3’s were waiting excitedly for her to come in. After that we all went outside to get a huge photo of the school and Merlyn. After those photos she came into an excited P6/7 where the p4,5,6 and 7’s were waiting. Josh Whitehead and Rory Reid – Kay were very excited! We got to ask Merlyn questions about why she wanted to become a sprinter and what it is like. Merlyn is recovering from an injury at the moment. We also asked her how fast she can run—11.2s for the 100 metres sprint! Wow!

Scottish Opera

On Friday the 11th February P4-7 and Queen Victoria School, performed a Scottish Opera called, ‘Scotland, Our Scotland!’ and it went very well! On Thursday the 27th of January a man from Scottish Opera came to work with us and he told us a lot of things to help us with singing, and a lot of them were very funny. He told us to stand straight, shoulders back and look confident and then we could do whatever we wanted!

The whole Scottish Opera was a great success and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

In the morning of the show the people from Scottish opera came and taught the P4/5’s a dance for one of their songs. We all had to wear Scottish costumes and do some acting, which was great fun!

Everybody has worked really hard this term with learning their words and singing the songs (some of them were VERY difficult)! It was all worth it though, everybody had a great day and enjoyed the whole experience.

Confident St.Mary’s

A new term has begun and it looks like it is going to be an exciting one! It is a new start and already people are being confident individuals. We have all been learning about being confident individuals and how confident individuals take risks.

P1 felt that being confident was about trying new things and they felt happy doing them. They also thought that you have to try, try and try again.

P2/3 felt confident when they did their nativity. At the start of the show they felt nervous but also felt confident that it was going to go well. After the show they were proud of themselves and they thought that they had done the best they could have done, so they thought of themselves as confident individuals.

P4/5 thought that they were being confident by doing shows.

P6/7 have been writing in their learning logs about ways in which they have been becoming confident individuals. Everyone at St Mary’s is a confident individual!

Burn’s Supper!

On the 25th of January 2011 the Nursery, P1 and P2/3 held their annual ceilidh dance in the hall. At lunchtime they all came looking very smart in their tartan and their kilts. We got a couple of quotes from the children involved.

In P1, Ruaridh said that they ate haggis, neeps and tatties, which he did enjoy very much. He also told us that everyone did some ceilidh dancing. Fin commented on the singing which he liked and the bagpipes which were very good too. He said that he celebrated burns at home that night as well (more haggis…lucky!). He thought that the address to a haggis was fab. Vienna said that she loved dancing with her mummy, the songs and holding the haggis. She said, ‘I liked following Mrs Kinvig’s big Fergus’.

Next we payed a visit to p2/3. Orla told us that they had haggis, neeps and tatties, Irn Bru, and they danced and sang. Fergus talked about dancing and (everyone’s favourite) the food. His favourite was the haggis. Rebecca danced with her Nana and her favourite song was ‘Ye Cannae Shove Yer Grannae Aff A Bus’! Archie immediately said ‘I liked the shortbread’! He also said that the dances they did were the Canadian Barn Dance and the Circasion Circle.

After that we went to the nursery to see what they thought about the burns supper. Madison said that she liked the haggis, the bag piper and dancing with her mummy. Chiara said that she liked the mashed potato and she danced with her mummy. Madeleine said that the things she liked the most were having her mummy as her dance partner and the mashed potato!

What Happened?

First, they all went down to the hall and they listened to the bagpiper. Then they saw Mr. Reid-Kay recite the ‘Address Tae A Haggis’ before they started tucking into their haggis, neeps and tatties. After they had all finished eating, they did some singing and ceilidh dancing to finish celebrating this special day.

Everyone enjoyed the celebration and had a great time.

Nursery Tackle Holme Hill…

On the 1st of February some of the nursery went up Holme Hill for a walk. They went to the hill then played for a bit climbing trees, making dens and looking at nature. They then went on a walk and looked at the trees.

Molly said, “I climbed on the fallen down trees. It was fun and I saw a deer”. Murdo said, “We made nice dens and I was scared climbing the tree”. Madison added, “I climbed on the tree”.

Everyone really enjoyed themselves and they all had a really nice time.

Glow Meet With Robert Burns!

On the 25th of January 2011, 8 very lucky p6/7’s got to go to the National Archives of Scotland to take part in a Glow Meet about a letter that was discovered by a man called David. David told us that on a rainy Monday morning he had discovered this letter in between pages of a book. It was written about Robert Burns, not by him, and it was not a forgery. David had to get one of his colleagues, Linda to help him find out and make definite that it was not a forgery. They told us how they found out that it was not a forgery and she had some of her tools with her and she showed them to us. She had two VERY strong magnifying glasses with her and a lot of different brushes. These are the tools that she had used to help find out about the letter, and when it was written. Robert burns died on the 21st July 1796 and the signatures in the book that we saw were written on the 14th July 1796 - a week before he died. We stayed there over lunch and before the Glow Meet we got a tour around the building and then we came back and started the Glow Meet. After the Glow Meet, and just as we were leaving the building, we were given bags full of stuff like a mug, a pencil, a bag, a pen, some sticky notes and lastly we got a copy of Robert Burns’s signature! We all had an excellent time and found it really really interesting!

Cool Curling!

On Monday the 31st of January primary six and seven went to the peak to do Curling at the ice rink. We had 2 weeks of training at school before we went. First of all we spilt up into groups of about 6 and practiced our lunges with some cones. Then we practiced lunging with the stone and a brush, but didn’t let go of the stone. Then after a while we learned how to stop and let go of the stone. After that we then let go and tried to get it in the house (the target).

We had a great time! Overall we came to the conclusion that curling is cool!
