Happy New Year!

Happy new year to all of the pupils, parents, guardians and staff. We hope you all had a good holiday. We have a very busy year coming up. Some of the stuff we will be doing this year will be cross country, p4/5 school swimming, forest schools and a new school topic, which is history of Dunblane. We hope you all have a good term!

Tim Baillie visits St Mary’s!

On the 6th of December Olympic gold medallist Tim Baillie visited St Mary’s assembly. He gave us a talk about what it was like being an Olympic athlete and he let us touch his gold medal!

After his presentation I interviewed him about his Olympic career and the ups and downs he had.

Have you ever had any injuries?

“Yes, a lot, a broken collarbone, a dislocated kneecap, torn abdominal muscles and lots more.”

What do you do nowadays?

“Things like this, going round to schools, training. That’s pretty much it.”

When did you start the sport?

“My parents were keen canoeists and they put me in a canoe and let me float there”

Will you be in the next Olympics or the next Commonwealth Games?

“No, we’ve not decided yet if we’ll be in either of them. We’ll be in the world championships in Prague though.”

The whole school loved and were transfixed by his talk.

Advent Assemblies

This term the whole school have been putting together Advent Assemblies. Every single child in the school takes part. This is something new to St Mary’s and it has been extremely successful. We start the Assembly with a song that the choir have been practising and then we light our REACH candles. A different person lights the candles and says what the value means. After that p6/7 read out their gifts of love, hope, family etc that they have linked to Children in Need. This is followed by p4/5 who have been reading Stig of the Dump, they are making wishes for children who live on dumps in the world today and they give a wish gift of something that would help them like, clean water, shelter and clothes. Then p2/3 read out clues about a character from their nativity and the audience has to guess who they are talking about. P1 then talk about wishes for people who don’t have very much to have at Christmas. Mrs White tells a story about Christmas and about what is really important to us. Finally we sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas while the candles are put out. We have really enjoyed these assemblies and especially like how our parents have been able to come along and watch too.

Skiing Success!

On the 26th October Hamish, Archie, Laura, Duncan, Dugald, Murdo and Molly set off to Tillicoultry for a school skiing competition. Other primary and secondary schools from around Stirling also competed. It was pretty cold in the morning. There were a lot of people there. They all participated in a long warm up before the competition started. When the races started it was really exciting! The pupils were separated into two teams called “Slick St.Mary’s” and “St.Mary’s Superstars”. We had to do a slalom against another team (dual slalom) The first team came third overall out of all the schools there, they qualified for the finals in the primary category in Glasgow on 12th November. Everybody was extremely proud of the bronze medals they won and everyone really enjoyed developing their skiing skills. Murdo said “it was really fun and it was 10 out of 10!” Archie, Hamish, Sophie and Dugald got through to the Glasgow finals and got 4th place - they did very well.

We interviewed Dugald and he said he felt proud and so did Molly.

Brilliant Buddy Bench!

There has been a new buddy bench put in the school play ground. It’s for people that want to sit down. It was on the 11th of October that we got it. It was paid for by Dunblane Hilton Community Fund. Loads of people love to sit on it. Every time I walk past it I see someone sitting with their friend or by themselves smiling. The person who assembled the buddy bench was Duncan’s dad. So when you walk past him remember to say thank you. The buddy bench is really popular and was a great idea!

Oak Tree Plaque!

At the end of last term Mr and Mrs Moore unveiled a plaque in the minister’s garden describing the special oak tree behind it. The tree is a Pyrenean Mountain Oak, a rare tree that is found in the Pyrenean Mountains in Spain. There are only a few in Scotland. Mr and Mrs Moore planted the oak fifteen years ago to commemorate the finished building of the extension.

Crazy Curling!

In the new master classes some of the pupils in primary 4 to 7 went to the peak to learn how to Curl. They were given a quick safety brief, got a Curling brush and went straight onto the ice. The group of the pupils were told to put bags on their shoes to help them slide easier. The instructors gave a demonstration on how to slide off the hack, which is a piece of wood with rubber on the side, which is used to slide off. The P7’s who went curling with the school are already pretty good.

Podcast 23Nov2012

The song at the start of the podcast is called “The Thistle”:

Chorus
Where the heather grows
Where the Highland sings
The thistle stands alone
The thistle stands alone
Where the birds spread their wings
Where the birds spread their wings

As we stand alone
As the wind blows the water ripples
The sun goes down, the moon comes up

We Met Andy Murray!

On the 16th of September as most of you know Andy Murray came back to Dunblane. Dugald and I were lucky enough to present a card that had been made by all of the children of St Mary’s to congratulate him.

We had to wait 2 whole hours in the rain for him to come as he was signing autographs for everyone. We were all excited when he eventually arrived at the Golden Post Box. There were also pupils from Dunblane and Newton Primary Schools to present him with cards. When he arrived, he took out his medals and I got to put on both the gold and the silver! Dugald and I were very lucky to be chosen to make the presentation and my ambition is to be world No.1 at tennis too.
